Disability Confident Workforces

This 2-hour, online course is suitable for participants in any role of an organisation.

This course is for a maximum of 20 participants per session. Please ensure your company IT policy permits the use of Microsoft Teams.

This course is made up of:

1. Pre-course (approximately 20-25 minutes)

Participants complete a short quiz covering basic disability facts and help them understand their level of disability confidence.

2. Online facilitated (2 hours)

This activity-based learning will cover disability definitions, statistics and the aim of disability confidence. As well as modelling accessible online meeting practice, the training will investigate why access and inclusion matters, alongside identifying impacts, barriers and adjustments for people living with disability.

Disability Confident Managers

This online course is suitable for participants in management or senior leadership roles in an organisation. The training will build disability confidence, so participants feel empowered to make change in their roles as a people leader, to progress access and inclusion.

This course has a maximum of 20 participants per session. Please ensure your company IT policy permits the use of Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Forms.

This course is made up of:

1. Pre-course (approximately 25-30 minutes)

Participants complete a short quiz that will cover basic disability facts and test their level of disability confidence.

Topics covered will include:

  • the ethical case
  • social good
  • their company’s Access and Inclusion Plan
  • key indicators of a Disability Confident organisation

2. Online facilitated Part 1 (90 minutes)

A large part of this first facilitated training will be focused on building disability awareness through a range of mediums.

Incorporating an overview of disability definitions, statistics, and the overall aim of disability confidence, this part will:

  • model accessible online meeting practice
  • investigate why access and inclusion matters.
  • identify impacts, barriers, and adjustments for people living with disability
  • discuss why people do and don’t share disability-related information, and
  • recap learning AND’s 3 guiding principles

Activity-based learning in the final section will see participants use word cloud prompts to discuss a video relevant to disability confidence.

3. Online facilitated Part 2 (90 minutes)

Part 2 builds on disability awareness, creating inclusive and enabling environments as managers and senior leaders.

Participants will recap important learning from prereader material through live quiz activities with real-time results, with topics including Person First Language, inclusive communication tips, inclusive behaviours, and environments, equality vs equity, and the Employment Assistance Fund.

Inclusive Recruitment

This online course is suitable for participants in any HR and recruiting roles.

The course is made up of:

1. Pre-course (approximately 25-30 minutes)

Participants complete a short quiz with answers drawn from a pre-course reader, designed for participants to learn basic disability facts while understanding their level of disability confidence. While building knowledge of accessible and inclusive communication and essential role requirements (focusing on what needs to be achieved, not how), the pre-course reader and quiz will examine considerations for applications, screening, testing, interview, offer and induction.

Completion of this survey provides participants with a link to the 2 x 90 minute sessions

2. Online facilitated Part 1 (90 minutes)

A large part of this first facilitated training will be a focus on building disability awareness.

Incorporating an overview of disability definitions, statistics and the overall aim of disability confidence, this part will model accessible online meeting practice, investigate why access and inclusion matters, identify impacts, barriers and adjustments for people living with disability, working with hiring managers, and debunking myths about recruiting people living with disability.

Activity-based learning in the final section will see participants address a hypothetical scenario and discuss their own work practices (if company policy permits).

3. Online facilitated Part 2 (90 minutes)

This part of the course builds on disability awareness, including:

  • Person First Language
  • inclusive communication tips
  • behaviours and environments
  • Equality vs Equity and the Employment Assistance Fund

The second facilitated training centres on activity-based learning where participants cement new ideas through discussing gold standard recruitment practice, and applying thinking to scenarios investigating the five parts of a recruitment cycle.

This course is made up of 2 parts:

1. Pre-course (approximately 25 minutes)

Participants complete a short quiz with answers drawn from a pre-course reader, designed for participants to learn basic disability facts while testing their level of disability confidence.

2. Online facilitated (2 hours)

This activity-based learning will incorporate an overview of disability definitions, statistics and the aim of disability confidence. As well as modelling accessible online meeting practice, the training will investigate why access and inclusion matters, alongside identifying impacts, barriers and adjustments for people living with a disability.

While building knowledge of accessible and inclusive communication, this course aims to allow participants to put knowledge into practice through a series of group activities focusing on both hypothetical scenarios relevant to employees in customer or client facing roles, and reflection engaging videos.

Accessible Communications

This online course facilitated by AND’s Training Lead is suitable for any participants interested in ensuring their verbal and written communication is accessible and inclusive, including participants in IT.

This course has a maximum of 20 participants per session.

Please ensure your company IT policy permits the use of Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Forms. Participants will need the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.

This course is made up of 3 parts:

1. Pre-course (approximately 30-35 minutes)

Participants complete a short quiz with answers drawn from a pre-course reader, designed for participants to learn basic disability facts while testing their level of disability confidence.

2. Online facilitated Part 1 (90 minutes)

This activity-based learning will cover an overview of disability definitions, statistics, and the aim of disability confidence.

As well as modelling accessible online meeting practice, the training will investigate why access and inclusion matters, alongside identifying impacts and barriers and accessible communication adjustments for people living with disability (what they are and how to ask).

Participants will recap important learning through quiz activities with real time results on topics including Person First Language, inclusive communication using the Accessibility Checker in MS Office Suite documents (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), tables and the DAT toolbar.

3. Online facilitated Part 2 (90 minutes) 

The second part of this training begins with the representation of people with disability in the media as participants engage with advertisement videos using quizzes and discussion.

Other subjects include:

  • web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG),
  • social media, hyperlinks, audio description,
  • captioning, alt text, slide colour contrast analyser and font.
  • Recap quizzes will cement understanding of accessible communication tips and the five R’s of why considering accessibility is important.

Activity based learning will see participants judge videos for quality of caption and image descriptions, alongside websites, documents and scenarios—thinking critically to apply learning and decide if these meet accessibility requirements.

Online webinar (60 minutes, stand-alone)

This facilitated training session equips participants with an understanding of accessibility and inclusion in the workplace.

The webinar provides skills and knowledge to confidently welcome and work alongside people with disability.

This training assists staff to identify ways to develop an inclusive and accessible environment for employees, customers and stakeholders.

By the completion of the session, participants will:

  • Understand the importance of disability confidence for individuals and the whole organisation.
  • Have greater awareness of what disability is in Australian society, including key statistics.
  • Be confident in using the right language and doing the right things.
  • Have awareness of workplace adjustments and sharing disability information.
  • Understand the value of inclusive behaviours.
