Floor patterns

Bold patterns can give the impression of movement, changes in level and also the perception that there is an object when one does not exist. In the photo below, floor pattern gives the impression that the floor is undulating, but is actually quite flat. Whilst it is intended to be very stylish, this hotel foyer creates significant issues for people with low vision or have a diminished sense of balance.

Additional considerations

• Avoid patterns which create an altered perception of depth, slope or change of level.
• Utilise floor patterns which give people with low vision a clearer sense of direction and pathway.
• Simple is better. Ensure good contrast between the walls and floor as well as between the furniture and the floor.
